Abstract
The lithium paradox: A critical analysis of the sustainability of battery life cycle in the energy transition. The present study aims to critically assess whether the decarbonization benefit provided by lithium-ion batteries in the energy transition outweighs the environmental impact generated throughout their entire life cycle. The urgency of the climate crisis and the high emissions of the energy sector drive electrification and the exponential increase in demand for critical minerals, such as lithium. The methodological approach adopted is qualitative analysis, grounded in a critical literature review and document analysis of policies and life-cycle-assessment evidence. The results consolidate lithium as a critical mineral due to its geopolitical vulnerability and the divergence of global strategies: the European Union focuses on regulation and environmental mandates, the United States prioritizes financial incentives and industrial autonomy, and China adopts centralized industrial control through a traceability system. The discussion establishes a sustainability paradox: the mitigation of carbon dioxide in the use phase is confronted by the environmental footprint in the production phase and at the end of the battery's life cycle. This displacement occurs because production generates a "carbon debt" and worsens toxicity indicators, and recycling does not efficiently close the loop, with lithium recovery rates below 1% due to technological inefficiency and low economic attractiveness. It is concluded that the net benefit of the energy transition will only be fully achieved if management policies ensure, through legal and technological mandates, the decarbonization of the energy mix in production and the large-scale recovery and reuse of minerals, overcoming the barriers of disposal.
