Abstract
Mining and agriculture in dialogue: A systematic review of the potential use of residual mineral resources in sustainable agriculture. Mining and agriculture have a strategic relationship in promoting sustainability, with mineral waste emerging as viable alternatives to improve soil fertility and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. Therefore, what are the contributions of mineral waste applied in agriculture to sustainability, considering agronomic efficacy and environmental impacts? The aim of this study was to evaluate, through a systematic review, the use of mining waste and tailings in agriculture, applied as fertilizers, soil conditioners and remineralizers. A systematic review was carried out using the AGRICOLA, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, with articles published between 2013 and 2024. The descriptors included terms such as "mining waste", "soil fertility", "sustainable agriculture" and "environmental impact". A total of 10,332 articles were initially selected, of which only 17 met the inclusion criteria. Residual mineral resources applied in agriculture improve soil fertility by gradually releasing nutrients, increasing productivity with fewer chemical inputs. This practice reduces leaching losses and promotes the Circular Economy, reducing inappropriate waste disposal. Despite the challenges, this approach represents a viable alternative, requiring further research and incentive policies for widespread adoption.
